About Me

Daniel G. Smith (he/him) is a high school chemistry teacher and science communicator. He leverages his diverse academic background and years of classroom experience to effectively communicate the beautiful and sometimes complex world of science to a broad audience. He has earned a degree in physics from Sonoma State University in Northern California, where he studied computational general relativity.

Inspired to become a science educator, he began teaching high school chemistry in 2021. Most days he’s in the classroom engaging students' natural curiosities about the physical universe and guiding them through the rigor of a science and laboratory course with passion and energy. He teaches students of all abilities and backgrounds to ask questions and think critically. In addition to teaching and writing, he has degrees in music performance and musicology. On his days off, he enjoys birding, live music, and basketball games.

My Mission

I'm dedicated to increasing scientific literacy by writing about science and by teaching the methods of scientific inquiry and reasoning to high school students in the classroom.

I believe science literacy empowers people to make more informed decisions in their personal lives and to make positive changes in their community.

Where I talk about science literacy and education.

Capturing the natural world through a lens of quiet appreciation and insatiable curiosity.
